Short Definition: Restriction of access to the content of a copy of a work.

Extended Definition: Restriction of access to the content of a copy of a work where usually only the metadata is freely available to read and download. In the context of a repository, access is restricted to the contents of the file(s) containing the copy of the work while the metadata is freely available. On a publisher’s online journal pages access to article content is denied to those whose access has not been paid for.

Just to clarify. Is it not true, that in rare cases, the metadata will also be embargoed too e.g. for highly anticipated glam mag publications?

I think it could be useful to mention in the extended definition the difference between ‘publication embargo’ - restriction to a version of the full text, usually for a period of time and often in specified locations, and ‘press embargo’ - restriction on any exposure of the work or its metadata prior to publication.

“Embargoed access refers to a resource that is metadata only access until released for open access on a certain date. Embargoes can be required by publishers and funders policies, or set by the author (e.g such as in the case of theses and dissertations).
