Short Definition: A reference model for managing digital content that defines the terminology and describes the responsibilities for the stewardship and dissemination of digital data within an archiving system.

Extended Definition: A reference model for managing digital content that defines the terminology and describes the responsibilities for the stewardship and dissemination of digital data within an archiving system. The OAIS reference model was developed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems and published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as ISO 14721:2012. The OAIS model has been adopted by archives, data centers, and repositories as a framework for the development and management of systems for preserving and disseminating digital data and information for a designated community.
