Short Definition: An organisation providing financial support for research activity.

Extended Definition: An organisation providing financial support for research activity. May be governmental, charitable or commercial. Such an organisation determines how funding is allocated for research and may have requirements for how the results of research are published, including open access (OA).

Not 100% sure about this - where there is a peer review process in place you could argue that the funding organisation doesn’t actually determine how funding is allocated, this is done by the community of scholars/reviewers. It might be safer to simply say ‘Such an organisation allocates funding for research and may have requirements…’ since this leaves open the possibility that the allocation is determined by others.
