Is an “institutional repository” a synonym of “subject repository”?

#3

maybe give an example or two of well known ones?

I agree with the previous comments - expanding from vcano’s point, however, I believe that most of the listed “synonyms” are just “related terms”. The only one that is actually a synonym is “disciplinary repository”. I’d also suggest that the definition be limited simply to explaining the way in which a subject repository is a specific kind of repository - by referring back to the main glossary entry for “repository”, this will help to standardise descriptions of more generic repository operations. For example:

  • Short definition = An online, digital collection of research outputs focused around a specific discipline.
  • Extended definition = An online, digital collection of research outputs (see “Repository”) that are connected purely by their discipline, rather than by other factors such as their institutional affiliation (see “Institutional Repository”). Examples of subject repositories include X and Y.
  • Synonyms = Disciplinary repository
  • Related terms = Repository; Institutional repository; Open archive; Data repository
